Well after getting various bits of advice and info, I figured out which of the two coils/points was the cut-out coil. This one prevents current drain from the battery back into the system. Advice I got was not to touch this one..so I didn't.

Second coil/points shorts out the Field terminal allowing a charge when the points touch. This particular regulator has only two coils while most car ones have three. Also, fyi, the generator is probably a 3 brush design.

Anyway, I adjusted the points ever so slightly so that it tended to increase the contact of these points. And voilá, it is now charging! Looks like the charging is low, about 2 amps, but still charges when the lights are on also...so it is working as designed.

Since I had extra regulators and an ammeter to see what I had done, I was willing to try this. The advice I received was that regulators are balanced and sensitive systems...so messing around with them too much is asking to get them so out of balance they won't work. That is one reason I only madet the single SMALL adjusment and tested it to see what it did.

One car/truck regulators that have 3 coils/points, I gather that one is still the cut-out, and the other two serve to enable charging...BUT I don't know if that is corrrect.

I never had this sort of problem on a car or truck, but my tractors have been a constant problem.
