If you use too high of a number then the heavy stuff doesn't circulate as well (heat removal) or get into the smaller passages (lubrication) as it should. I'd feel more comfortable with a mix of manufactureres reccommended weight and a quart or so of 40/50 weight to get some higher viscosity in the mix. If you go all 50 weight you are covering up a problem you might be better off fixing. I ran a 30 and 50 mix before I rebuilt my engine. Now it just uses 30 weight with good pressure and minimal leaks/burn.
