As long as you see no leakage from the front axle, I would say that you're OK. On the bigger trucks, (M35, for instance) you can run all day without the flanges, as there is a seal in the front wheel hub area that prevents the grease from leaking out.

We often pull the rear axle shafts right out, and bolt the front flanges on the rear wheels as a temporary method to transport a truck with no drivetrain movement.
