I have a 01 R/T, and have done many mods for better fuel economy, Fastman Throttle Body, headers, ect.... The best I ever got was near 16 in a combo city/highway. I've heard of people with the 5.2 (318) getting 21-22 highway, but I think they were 4X2's.
I got my D for a work vehicle, so mileage was never an issue. I need to be able to tow large loads, and they do that quite well. I have a 26' Travel Trailer that it pulls like it's not there. I had a 99 D, which I think was a much better vehicle than my 01 mechanically speaking. As for the 05 D's, well to me and a bunch of other people, they're just over glorified mini vans.
