Make your plate with tapered ends so you don`t get a straight vertical weld on the patch. Naturally , the initial weld will have to go however the crack goes. I prefer to place the patch on the inside and grind the outside so it isn`t visible. I weld with 7018 electrodes and haven`t had a frame to crack that I repaired in 30 years.
