48 b-1 Frame welding recommendations

Have a crack in the frame under the bed on the rear passenger side. Does anyone have a recommendation on the thickness or size of the steel patch? I'm assuming just regular mild steel, the heigth of the frame rail, x say 4 or 6" long. Maybe 5/16" plate. I also hear that best is weld only vertically on the two sides.
