Mechanical drive will be cheaper if you can make it work. Paul in NY uses a hydraulic drive in conjunction with the MU-2 winch on his carryall. I was able to use a mechanical drive on my diesel M37, though it was really a tight squeeze. Have you considered using a driveshaft tucked into the frame rail going from the winch back and then using a chain to drive it from the back of the pto? I almost did this on the M37 before I figured out a way to make it work.
