Hot diff

I just got done flat-towing my M37 about 20 miles in a combination of city traffic and flat roads. On the open roads I went about 35-40 mph. When I got back the front differential was hot. Not too hot to leave my hand on, but definitely more than warm. The rear was warm, but not nearly as hot as the front. Is this normal? Both drivelines are hooked up, and the transfer case and tranny were in neutral. The front tires were also warm, but I attribute some of that to friction while turning, since I had to tie the steering wheel in place to make it track okay. I'm trying to decide about flat-towing it 400 miles next week, but if the differential got that hot going 20 miles at 40 mph, I'm concerned about what will happen if I go much farther.
