I'd guess that industrial behemoth has gears, so cam timing is tough to screw up?

To check cam timing should be: #4 exhaust valve just closing, #4 intake just opening, flywheel should indicate #1 tdc. Gas engines have overlap, this method is called "splitting the overlap". I dunno about this JD..."splitting the underlap"?
