Well my son Gordon and I set off friday afternoon to Long Island to pick up the first of 2 Power Wagon parts trucks. 350 miles each way and straight through New York City (cringe) We hed a route mapped out that had us on about a doven throughways, parkways, and every other type of ways. we made the first 3 or 4 changes fine and then we lost it. A native NYer would have had no problem but not me! Next thing we are on the streets of Queens, in a truck and 28' trailer at 8:30 at night. Not too easy to get turned around but I did manage one illegal u-turn n the middle of a street. After about 1/2 hour of wandering we found our way to the Long Island Expressway East. What a welcome sight that was. We made it with little or no problem to some friends house where we were to spend the night. In the morning we found the trucks with only minor navigational glitches. Got one loaded on and then we went to the sellers parents house "for some other parts" Imagine my suprise when he brought out a pair of mint condition rear fenders (series 2 and 3) a NOS headlight bucket, another used but in great condition headlight bucket, a series 2 and 3 spare tire carrier, amd a bunch of other goodies.
On the way to the sellers parents house, I was sitting at a red light in front of a Honda dealer. These 2 guys come running out of the dealership, hollering "where did you get that? Do you want to sell it? etc etc. I wanted to talk with them to see if they were really serious, but I was following the seller. The light turned green and off we went. After getting the parts, I went back to the dealership. The guys were gone, but one of the salesmen knew them and called one of them up. He wasnt really interested after all. The sales manager was having a cow with me parked in his lot with this horrible looking junk truck. We were asked to leave. I felt like Jed Clampett!
The trip home was uneventfull and I spent today cutting it up. The truck had a set of Dualmatic hubs which I have removed and cleaned up, they are in great shape. The windshield was also in great shape as is the regulator! The sheetmetal was all totallly gone, and there was a chevy v-8 installed. I had to put it out of its misery!
Lots of great parts coming up for sale soon.
