Can't engage front axle with de-clutch lever?

Tried to engage the transfer case shift lever and followed the instructions in the operators manual. Pulled back on the right lever while slowly engaging clutch, without clutch in gear, in neutral etc... Crawled under the truck and there is nothing binding the lever and the shaft going into the transfer case ethier. Any ideas???
