backfires can be caused by late ign timing
and if vac advance not advancing then that
could be the problem
vac advance unit could have gone south
easy to check with timing light
I would put the old parts back & start over
what was wrong with the distributor ??
a tech note:
never replace components until you find out
what is causing the problem
also make sure all ground leads are clean &
secure
