By the way, I checked the drums that came off my centered rear axle and they are the same size as the WDX-WM300. I don't think we need to remove the brake backing plates after all. I think the brake adjusting cams are mounted further up on the backing plate (farther from the center line of the axle). This would explain why the adjusters are not as far apart as the ones on the WDX-WM300. They should work just fine. You should be able to compare them with yours to tell for sure. Do you know if the bearing surface needs to be sleeved?
