Automotive Mechanics (William H. Crouse)
editions 2 (1951) 3 (1956) or 4 (1960)
a text book with complete information on how
all the components work (I have 3rd edition)
shop manuals assume that the reader knows how
things work as they are designed for trained mechanics (new term is technician)
unless one has taken courses in Automotive Mechanics or has gone thru an apprenticeship program then chances are the knowledge of how
things work might not be there
also these additions cover the vintage vehicles that most of us are working on today
there are a few on ebay today search on
AUTOMOTIVE MECHANICS
might be the best investment you make
