Higher octane, less horse power?

It's been 25 years since I messed with propane conversions. It was cheaper then. As I recall, it has higher octane but less energy/gal, burns cooler. Sooo, a flathead Dodge won't gain from the octane, and can't afford the loss of power. There are reasons it is not used universally. But since it burns clean, it is LOTS better for interior uses. I do see transit bus diesels converted now-a-days, but I think the cleanliness is a major perk.
