Both transmissions (88950 is the casting number that most people I know refer to them by or "early type) and the NP420 are only synchro on 3 and 4. Slight differnece in the gear tooth angles internally, one has left hand threads on the input shaft bearing retainer nut, the other is right hand. Early one has the fill plug on the driver side, late one is on the passenger side. Early one has two fingers comming down from the top cover with one (reverse) comming up from the box, the later one (NP420) has all three shift fingers comming down from the top. The later model was also fitted with a longer shift lever, but they are so easy to swap that I wouldn't use that as anything but a first glance indicator...

Units swap as assemblies.

I have both of them on the shelf in Raleigh but use a ZF 5 speed behind my Cummins...
