Bypass systems actually filter about 5 to 10 times better than a standard full flow. Full flows have to maintain high pressure to fully lubricate the bearing and they do that with a filter with less resistance, that is, by allowing larger particles to pass. What people forget is a bypass system when running is under full engine pressure (40-60 pds) and will fully filter all the oil in a 5-10 minute period. Big rigs have used a combo of full flow and bypass for years. In fact, I recently read in one of the auto trade mags Ford is re-introducing them on some of the larger trucks. The main beneficiary of full flow filters are the dealers cause they cut down service time and they can turn more vehicles in a given day. Just because it's old tech doesn't necessarily mean it doesn't work well. Another example is oil bath air cleaners. Clearly do a better job than paper (Scientifically proven in SAE research) but because paper/foam are "newer" many think they are better.
