That's quite true Dave. I started out thinking the trans or transfer case was making noise.
I disconnected the rear drive line and engaged the front axle. The whackety noise went away. Upon further investigation I found that the rear axle would thump when I spun the wheel with one side off the ground.Also the pinion feels strange when I move it under a load. The upshot was that the noise was telegraphing through the drive line and hiding the source of the noise.
