Here is what I do to clean parts:

I create a cold tank using one can of lye that you buy at the grocery store @ $1.00 a can the same stuff that is used to clean drains. Then I use a rubber made container and about 3-5 gallons of water dependending on the size of the part(s) I plan to clean. Mix it together and let your part sit in it over night completely covered by water. The next morning, use a five gallon bucket to wash the part in using a water hose to catch all the "*&^$)(@" stuff. Let this stuff evaperate off and when dry, put in plastic bags and send to the dump. Put the lid on the cold tank until next time you need to use it.

This strips off old hard oil, dirt, and paint. Does not work on grease or heavey oil.

After I wash the part off with water, I immediate wash it with mineral spirits and let dry. The used mineral spirits I send to the recycling center along with my used motor oil. I to try to be friendly to the environment, and also have only the home garage to work in.
