Some things to check:

1. Tire pressure;

2. If your full-time on your front axle, consider some locking hubs;

3. Check the emergency brake band for proper adjustment. Make sure upper band is not riding on top of the drum. This happens from spring fatigue or mis adjustment. BIG power robber!

4. Check ignition points for gap and ignition timing.

5. If this truck has set for many years, check oil level in running gear components.

Doing the above will not achieve 440 performance, but will make a considerable difference in acceleration, and your engines ability to pull 4.89 gears. Good Luck!
