I had aluminum hubs fail on me, which of course happened to my 62 W300 at the worst time. I was trying to get through a substantial snow drift. Worst of all the only person who came by was driving a F350 and wasn't interested in helping me dig out. He just wondered if the wheels would fit his suburban. Steel would be my preference, although I'm sure that aluminum suffices normally.
