{{I just got my hands on a late seventies PW. The previous owner had transfer case problems and removed the tc and tranny. He did not remove the torque converter from the driveplate. Haynes tells me this WILL cause damage to the driveplate, the pump bushing and the oil seal. Is Haynes correct or should "will" be "may"? }}

By drive plate, do you mean the flex plate on the rear of the engine? I have pulled trannies before without removing it. However, you have to be careful to avoid damage. The front seal is almost surely toast but I ALWAYS put a new one in as a matter of course. It's a $10 part and several hours of aggravation to change it later. The torque converter must be in the tranmission and all the way in to avoid wiping out the front pump when you reinstall it. I can't see how it would damage the flex plate though. You'd have to get really radical to damage it.
