A good stiff whack is all that a lot of them needed. YMMV. I don't see any problem with too much heat. But not enough heat will allow gas to condense out into droplets in the intake. At 50 mph, 10 mpg, your carb turns 1 gallon of gas into vapor every 12 minutes. That absorbs LOTS of heat, which can cool an unheated intake til ice forms. I'm not worried about it on my own truck. If it is stuck closed, it gets LOTS of heat, if it is stuck open , it still gets some heat. An automatic one from a car would be a good retrofit, if they made one? Or maybe parts from a /6 and some ingenuity?
