Jonas,
Hate to stick my neck out on this Forum since we know the general opinion of Fords! But I've had my '86 F250 w/ 6.9L Navistar for 11 years now and at 145,000 miles its treated me well. Performance for that size truck is great, and milage ranges from 14.5 to 17 mpg. I've got the Ford 4-speed (without a granny-low 1st gear) and its been a great combination for a general-use truck. Both postings so far are correct: As Chris said, The glow-plug system is less than desirable. Ford won't admit the problem, but one of our local top-end mechanics (Leonard Vascholtz, whose family has driven at the top of the Pikes Peak Hill Climb competition for years) convinced our local Ford dealer to put together as a package and sell at a single price all of the part numbers needed to convert the 6.9L glowpug system over to that of a 7.3L. Since having that change done a few years back, I've not had any glow plug problems.
As Dan said, it does use some oil. Consumption was pretty high for me until replacing the rear main seal along with its first clutch job at about 135,000. I've got some leakage around the headgaskets that I don't want to sink money into, but in spite of this seapage it must be burning some too because I have to watch it and top it off frequently. No drips on the garage floor, but it takes a fresh quart every 800-1000 miles or so.
Since by the time I'm done with my truck, it won't be worth much to sell, I've thought of using the 6.9 as a donor into a Marmon Harrington, or other nice old Ford 4x4 with more under-the-hood-space than a PW. Also thought about the transplant when I was inquiring about your 1 1/2 ton Chevy military dump ... do you still have it?
Good Luck with the Cornbinder, nice looking truck! How's the M715 these days? Bruce
