The brake lights are individualy operated through the turn signal switch. Turn and brake use the same filaments, the running lights are the other, dimmer filament. A bad ground can send juice up the running light filament, through the brake/turn filament, through the wires to the other side. It will seem to be brakes lights because the brake/turn filament is the brighter of the double filament bulb. The fact that usually one side is on, the other occassionally, eliminates the brake switch??? Remove the lenses to see which filaments glow? The bad ground could be in a front turn signal too...maybe related to the generator/regulator grounded to a front fender?...engine shut down, generator loses residual magnetism, regulator kicks in, energizing generator through poorly grounded left front fender, taillights glow? Try unplugging the brake light switch next time it happens? Or maybe Chris in Idaho is right- heat soak after running expands the brake fluid in the system, causing enough pressure to turn on brake lights...but why one, or sometimes 2...

Any other Chris's want to weigh in here?
