Maybe the previous owner need a 2 in longer line ? (remember, these trucks predate Viagra!)
Emergency fuel supply?
as warning that he has beat on his sticky inlet needle enough- stop when glass breaks? sort of a reverse "In case of emergency, break glass"?
Or maybe an earlier replacement pump didn't have a filter on it, so one was added at carb, next correct pump ten years later had a filter soooo.....
