After 15 years of sitting in a field, this engine started and ran with only 20 min of tinkering, and no new parts. It ran for about 10min before it died with no warning as soon as it was under a load. After some lengthy diagnosis we figured out that the timing chain had jumped time.

After calling around to 5 or more places we found a replacement chain 2 1/2 hours south. So after 5 hours of driving the chain was in hand, and the truck was prepped for surgery.

We supported the engine with a block of wood on top of a jack, and then we pulled the radiator, front engine mount, pulley, timing chain cover, etc.

We found the timing chain had jumped 7 teeth, despite the sage advice of another PW expert that the FH6 is very unlikely to have the timing chain jump teeth.

Surgery was started at 4:00pm, and by 5:30pm the same day the engine was purring like a kitten, and showing us how reliable these old flatheads are!

Thanks to Ron and all his efforts, as without his tools and extensive knowledge this project would have been almost too much, and would have taken at least a full days work.

This is what you have to look forward to Will! Maybe you should call in the expert!
