There were plenty of wars and empires on this land before any white man looked at it. They just didn't write them down in history books like they did in Europe. Anywhere you go there's enough blood in the earth to justify fighting another war to avenge the past one. I'm not defending O. O. Howard or the people that gave him his orders, just saying we've got to make do with what we've got today as far as whose land is whose. The world's too crowded to change things around without spilling lots more blood.

As for the bull, I thought "open range" meant the bull can go wherever he wants and if somebody doesn't want him on their land, they have to fence him out. Maybe that's what the feds told the Indians.

Mark, I didn't realize you were surrounded by Indian land up there. I hope it's deeded, not leased. A lot of people who've been leasing for generations at reasonable prices are suddenly finding their land leases going through the roof.

I suppose being surrounded by Indian land is a bit like being surrounded by Forest Service land, as I am. On the one hand, it makes for a lot of open space and no trouble with neighbors, but on the other hand, you know they're always looking at you as an "inholding" and thinking about how to get that gray rectangle off of their nice green map.
