First Range War I have been in with the Colville Tribe since I have lived on the Reservation for 9 years. A neibors Bull was picked up on Open Range by the Tribes Range Rider. They ticketed the owner and hauled his Bull off to Tribel Owned Lands and fined him $210.00 saying the Bull wanderd onto indian owned land. They also had him Slaughterd so it could not happen again. Well we heard the Indians were a coming with stock trailers to snag Shelbys & others cows now on our lands inside the boundrys of the Reservation! Off and running we went getting them all home and locked up behind fences in our pastures we have. The other neibor we know also has cows on the range since we live in a open range area. He had just got back from the hospital having surgury and could not round up his. The cr*p hit the fan fast and the FBI, Federal Marshal, Sheriff and County Court House was involded real quick. Well we won the war the indians backed down and they found out they had no power over the white man on the privet owned lands in the reservation. They tried to get us to pay them $6.60 per Cow/Calf or bull per month to have them on privet owned open range not owned by the Tribe! There tone changed after the FBI and Federal Marshals got in the middle of it. Now we know they can't even give us a ticket and have no jurestdiction over us because we own the land we live on. As far as the Bull went they will have to settle it in Civel Court to get any recourse for there loses even tho they did not follow the law in dealing with the bull. You can't win fighting them in there court! So we are on alert because they had to back off and our cows are still locked up for a while. I thought for sure the guns were going to be coming out and a new Indian War started over this today. We could have been on the Fox News Station tonight!! We now know we live in sorta our own Solvern Nation here on the Reservation and fall under Federal protection laws in a Gray Area of unwritten rules. Like the old days of the West during the Barb Wire Range War times. So it was a exciting day for us around here for a while. Mark H.
