'53 Transmission will interchange with the '46, but the '46 is the "before type" and is supposedly a better transmission. Maby it's just the pin in the shift tower is broken or sloppy and you could repair that.
Syncro NP420's did'nt come out untill '55 or'56 on the Power Wagon. It's a nice change (I did it to my '53), but only 3rd and 4th are syncro, and it's a bit of work to change it out. You need a 420 Bellhousing and 4wd lever linkages and handbrake sector. It still drives like a old PW, but no rattle in 3rd gear.
