I think you are really worrying about nothing, if turbo failure was that common, you might have gotten some replies to your question. But here goes

1. Carry a pre made plate to bolt onto the Turbo compressor side to block that opening.
Don’t waste the time
2. Remove and Gut the turbo, put the plate on the compressor end to close that opening. Then put the empty Turbo Housing back in place.
Take off turbo, fab a 90 degree bend that hooks to the exhaust pipe, trow the turbo in the junk box
3. Remove the oil feed line to the Turbo and cap it off. Cap the oil return line from the Turbo.
Drop the oil line in the return tub and hose clamp it in there
4. Remove the air intake line from the Turbo and with a coupling connect it to the air intake filter
make a 180 bend from filter into hose for intercooler
5. Now I have just an empty Turbo housing, part of the exhaust system and am running naturally aspirated.
