What If.........4BTA Turbo Failure

I am looking at options should the Turbo fail on the Cummins 4BTA in my Carryall, M-37 and Power Wagon (in the future). What if the Turbo went IN OP on the trail, in the middle of nowhere or even half way driving to a Power Wagon Rally. For this question, please consider the Turbo is Trash for whatever reason, totally out of service.

With the assumption that the actual Turbo exhaust housing is still intact, could I do the following?

1. Carry a pre made plate to bolt onto the Turbo compressor side to block that opening.

2. Remove and Gut the turbo, put the plate on the compressor end to close that opening. Then put the empty Turbo Housing back in place.

3. Remove the oil feed line to the Turbo and cap it off. Cap the oil return line from the Turbo.

4. Remove the air intake line from the Turbo and with a coupling connect it to the air intake filter

5. Now I have just an empty Turbo housing, part of the exhaust system and am running naturally aspirated.

Will the Engine Run to get me home? What if I am on the road going to a Rally, will this Jury Rig keep me running for 1500 miles at much reduced performance? Will any engine damage happen operating without the Turbo. The point is, Can I, with this Jury Rig, remain Mobil without damage to the engine?

I am looking at options so as not to be trapped on the trail, or on the road, subject to high expense, long delays, if I had a Turbo Failure.

Paul
