SOME QUESTIONS WE HAVE RECEIVED THAT OTHERS MAY WANT TO KNOW ABOUT w/ ANSWERS BY MY FATHER-IN-LAW

Does it need anything?
Transmission leaks because it is not driven often
New wheel cylinders for the rear are included but not installed but stops and starts good

Could you fill me in on some of the restoration details such as, has the engine been rebuilt, transmission, do all electrical components work, etc.

I THINK that the engine might have been rebuilt by the Ffx Cty Fire Dept
Good compression uses no oil
No reason to worry about rebuilding the engine at this point
It is the original engine for that truck
Transmission leaks cause its not driven often
Probably needs new seals and gaskets cause its not driven regularly
Yes all electrical components work.

Is the truck all original? What is the top road speed of the truck? Did the truck have another type of bed on it?

Body fenders running boards are original as far as I can tell
Had an after market fire body on it which incorporated the running boards. Had them capped off with the same type material

NOS (new old stock):
Outside rearview mirrors and brackets are reproduction. Interior rearview mirror is stainless steel and that is reproduction purchased from Vintage Power Wagons
New radio
Crank is NOS purchase from Vintage Power Wagons
Top Road speed: ca. 53 mph
Original bed was an after market fire body. Have pics if nec.
Snowplow included

How does the truck drive around town- fairly smooth or more like a big truck? Is it geared pretty low-what speed will it cruise along the highway at? What's the gas mileage?

Really smooth
Cruises well at 45 mph
Gas mileage is 10 at best

It appears from the photos that the wing on the passenger side door is missing part of the frame? Is the flat bed built in such a fashion that it could be easily removed to accept original bed sides and wood floor?

Not missing part on the wing of the passenger door. Can take another picture for them.
Flat bed can be removed.

Nice PW! Where did your father-in-law get his tires. I have a very old set of Firestones on my 55 and would love to find a replacement.

Tires are original from the fire dept
Front tires are 9.00x16 Good Year Hi Milers
Rear tires are firestone

Do you know if the engine was rebuilt at the time of restoration, or was it more cosmetic?

More cosmetic. Told that the Fairfax City fire dept rebuilt it.

Were the brakes, clutch, etc. updated as well?

New throw out bearing in the clutch. Brake shoes excellent due to low miles. Front wheel cylinders replaced due to leaking. New rear cylinders purchased at same time but not installed.

You refer to a PTO, but said there is no winch as I see from the pictures. I assume the PTO was for the snow plow? Do you know the plow mfg? You do not refer to a rear PTO, so it must be for the front only.

PTO was used to drive the water pump for the FFx Cty fire truck body. Snow plow lift is electric over hydraulic. Mfg (I believe) is Meyers. Snow plow return springs and skid shoes were replaced.

Curious if the larger clutch was ordered from the factory?

Don’t know.

How would you rate the restoration in % terms?

Restoration was done to the point where I could use the truck daily. It is not museum quality, but does show very well and gets great reaction in parades.

Should I assume the paint is not original?

It looks too good to be that old in the photos. New paint in 1999.

Have all of the restoration receipts. Has original operator’s manual.

ANOTHER COMMENT ON THE PW

Another unique feature about the PW - There are Grab handles on the side of the cab that are left over from the original fire truck conversion. They are chrome-plated brass
