Now you need to pull the dist out to work on it easier. After you have it out you will be able to see the insulator that holds the stud you hook the wire to. Remove the nut and slid the stud out of the housing to insect the fiber insulator. It should keep the metal stud from touching the dist housing. If it does not do this you need to replace it. If it is OK then you need to check that the conection for the wire is not slipped out of the points and touching the base plate the points screw to. If you have a OHM Meter you can check to make sure the points are not grounded to the plate when open. If they are you need to find out why and where they are touching metal. You also need to make sure the wire going to the points is good inside the dist. The wire going to the capasitor could also be twisted in the conection and shorting to the base plate. Just because your dist is not working right is not cause for a new one. Look for the short to ground or broken wire. These things can be fixed easy on it. Mark H.
