While Boiling in the Sugar House this morning, I was thumbing thru the Army Technical Manual TM 9-8030, Air Force TO 36A-1-411, Dated May 1955.

I came on some interesting information regarding knuckle grease and even a picture.

Page 323, Section 206 Steering Knuckle and Universal Drive Installation

The manual states to use Automotive and Artillery Lubricating Grease inside the Knuckle, further reading, it states to also use Automotive and Artillery Lubricating Grease in the wheel cone bearings using a roller bearing lubricator or kneading the grease into the bearing with your fingers.

It now appears quite clear that Dodge and the Military Spec'ed Automotive and Artillery Lubricating Grease. And since the same grease went into the cone bearings it was not a fluid grease. It was a wheel bearing type grease. Also looking at the picture, you can see the grease globbed on and sticking in piles to the Universal Drive Joint. Fluid or semi fluid grease would not glob up like this on a joint being taken apart, as the picture shows. The knuckles on a M-37 are the same as PW, only axle shafts being different.
