it is a standard pattern, of varying measurements and accompanying numbers(bolt pattern across the flywheel housing face) that transmissions, pumps, marine trannies, etc. will bolt directly to.
The engine you are looking at appears to have a SAE#3, and several types of transmissions will bolt up to that flwheel housing.
The flywheel housing will have a "standard" side, and of course a specific side that attaches to that engine.
