Hey Paul. Running the cable under the truck to winch backwards is the dirty way to do it, but I have seen it done. Usually the cable is run under the truck, before hand, and the hook attached to the rear of the vehicle. Then, once the truck is stuck, the cable is all nice and handy there at the rear to pull yourself out backwards. If you need to pull to the front front, just unhook from the rear of the truck and use the winches power to pull the cable from under the truck until the hook is back at the front bumper. (At least that is how it was done back when I used to be a member of the local 4-wheel-drive Associations.)

There is a better way to winch oneself backwards though. It involves the use of 3 to 4 snatchblocks, at least as many trees or anchors, and a full drum of cable. A friend of mine found the information in some old manual and I would never have believed it would work if I had not tried it myself. I will have to see if I can draw and post a diagram. I demonstrated it at one of the VPW Rallys.

There is also another good book containing information on winching, cables, chains, etc. It is an old TM but I do not have it in front of me to recite the number. i believe the title is, "Rigging and Engineer Hand Tools".
