Mark, you can use the transmission to drive the truck while winching, if you put the transfer case back in gear. There are at least two unpleasant possibilities that can happen: 1. Your truck might move ahead faster than the winch is winding the cable in, causing a crossing of the line on the drum, damaging or even breaking the cable. 2. If you get your vehicle freed from being stuck and forget to disengage the PTO, you could cause serious damage to the winch/cable/driveline.
As Mike's reply states, winches are very dangerous and should be highly respected. Not only can they break things, but they can cut off fingers or hands if you get in between the cable and the drum or if the cable breaks. JH
