Hi,

Use your idea of cutting apart the old cam and drilling holes through the center, then use a washer on both sides and a fine threaded bolt to pull the new bearings in. Sounds like you have access to a lathe, so you can just use a big washer and turn it down to fit in the cylinder case, maybe weld a smaller washer inside to fit your choice of bolt.
Drive the old ones out with a punch, or maybe you can push them out with your cam journal/bolt/washers and the front bearing (opened up to fit as appropriate.
Make sure you line up the oil holes, multiple holes on #4 (to oil the heads). Once you have them in, you might need to scrape the bearings to get the cam to fit good, this is common practice. Make sure the cam rotates easily when you are done.
