Dan is correct about the NP-205 not being able to select front drive only. The T-20 and T-300 transfer cases found in Scouts and Jeeps can be modified to run front wheel drive independent of rear wheel drive. For example, you can put the front in low range and the rear in high range at the same time (not a good idea) with a modified twin stick T-20 or T-300. You can also put the front in either low or high range while the rear is in neutral.

The NP-205 can be modified to place the truck in either 2-wheel drive low range, 4-wheel drive low range, 2-wheel drive high range or 4-wheel drive high range. The rear is engaged at all times, while the front can be engaged or disengaged at will.

I hope this helps to reduce some of the confusion on transfer cases. I don't know how the other, newer t-cases can be modified, if at all.
