The adjusting screw with the spring under it is for the idle mixture. Turn it in until the engine almost quits, then back it out until it idles smoothly.
You'll still likely have to remove the carb top and adjust the float level. Check the float needle. Mine had a lot of wear on the needle, and the truck only had about 28,000 miles on it.
