Steering knuckle brass cones

Thought I'd see if anybody has opinions about replacing the brass cone on the top of the steering knuckle on both the Dana 70 and Dodge front axels with the corresponding tapered roller cone. It seems to me that the purpose of the brass cone was to provide drag to damp the steering action in the same way a hydralic steering damper does. I did this "upgrade" to my damper equiped W-300 about 10 years ago and have been very pleased with how tight it has stayed since. By the way, the original shims gave a nice tight preload on the knuckles set up with the tapered rollers. I have also worked on IH 1600's with the 70 front axel which had tapered rollers top and bottom, but they had power steering.

Thanks, Rob
