The external balananced Chryslers have weights welded to the torque converter/fylwheels to balance the engine asembly. The clutch assembly/flywheel you intend to add must match the same balace that the original torque converter had or you will damage parts. Contact "Mopar Performance" to find out what options you have for changing over to a clutch.

The 318 was externally balanced between approximately 1973-1978. Otherwise, it was internally balanced. You can quickly determine its type by looking at the halmonic balancer design. The extranally balanced engines have a thicker balancer. I had a 1979 318 that was internally balanced w/ a forged crank. Swirl port 318's of the 1980's were also internally balanced and had forged cranks. Thus, not every 318 flywheel would be the same because the cast crank 318 flywheels would have balance weights added and the internally balanced engines would not.

Hope this helps.
