Jack, I really don't see how you might have read into my statement about "discipline and education of an items value" was in someway an insult directed at you or anyone else. It simply means any buyer of an item who does not know what he wants, the condition of the item, how much he is willing to pay and the fair market price is looking for trouble. I would never attempt to purchase a horse myself, I know very little about horses, I would take a person with me who had experience and trust his opinion. Even so I don't think a "silver tongue" devil of an auctioneer could convince me a "swaybacked and crippled" horse was a race horse. You are correct that there are SOME crooked auctioneers, just like there are crooked mechanics, insurance salesman, lawyers, builders, preachers, busboys, bankers and candlestick makers. Finally, no person can be ripped off if he is educated as to the value of an item. If you are uncertain if there may be unseen damage or problems, you bid based upon a worst case senario. No damage, you get a great deal, damaged goods, you fix it and get the item at the price you considered fair. Last word from me, then you can get in the last word and this can die.
