You can put in 4.89 gears, and go with 38" tires (Bob Stahl at Veteran Vehicles has the gears). But if you do that, you really should put disc brakes up front at least, and make sure your front end and steering are in excellent shape. You could also buy 20" wheels from Bryan Sage in Co. and put 41" tires (900-20's) on to give you more road speed. If your using the stock 230 motor, you will find you have even less power available than as you do in stock configuration withh 5.83 gears and 36" tires.
Reccomendation: Unless you like wrench turning, bloody knuckles, and the smell of gear lube permeating your inner being (like me)... stick with what you have and enjoy the scenery.
The Power wagon and M37 are engineered to be what they are, as they are. It has been my expirence that when you modify one thing, you typically need to modify something else to compensate for that.
