Dave:

Do you have a copy of John Zentmyer's Power Trains and Interchanges book TM9-1080C? I highly recommend a copy for your project. The answer may be on pages 13 to 15.

The WC 1/2 ton rear axle shafts are 36-14/64" long. The early WC 3/4 ton rear axle shaft for use with a 2 pinon 8-3/4" third member is 36-17/64" long. The later WC 3/4 ton axle shaft (same CC part #) for use with the 4 pinon third member is shorter, only 36-15/64" long. The problem when using early WC 3/4 ton axle shafts can be corrected by grinding off 1/32" from the early WC 3/4 ton axle shafts or by getting later WC 3/4 ton or WC 1-1/2 ton axle shafts.

This might be the type of problem you are having. If so, it might be corrected by grinding off a bit (1/32" or so) of the splined end so the axle shafts seat fully on the hub flange. Good luck!
