I take the tank off of the system or at least isolate it and close all the fitting holes with plugs and caps except one that I will use to reduce to a grease zerk and one with a pressure gauge on it so I can see what I am doing with a high enough scale (200 or so plus pounds). I fill it with water putting the last hole open on the top to get all the water in and air out. The least bit of water will compress so it will slow the compressing. I put the zerk in, pump in grease and with no traces of air in the tank the pressure will go up fast. The hydraulic pressure of a grease gun is tremendous. If I figure on running say 150 # pressure I run the test pressure up to say at least 200# or higher for a greater saftey margine and I know it will be safe to hold the lesser pressure with air. If tank fails it will crack and let out the water, not explode as with air pressure. And that's how I do a "hyro test". VERY IMPORTANT:I make sure of using a new or at least tested safety pop off valve on the system.
