Use a reverse light switch on the tranny. If the tranny doesn't have reverse switch capability, get a limit switch with a flexible shaft, and cobble up a bracket. I'm sure that someone on this forum has done it.
Not knowing whether you need a normally-on or -off, I would suggest that you get a SPDT limit switch. It has both.
