Yes. Coasting backwards, while the OD is engaged, will cause a problem. As an example, you come to a stop at a traffic light, facing uphill. You have the OD engaged. Upon starting again, you roll backwards. This will damage the OD (or for that matter, any "sprag" type transmission or transfer case. the popular example is the transfer in the M135/M211 2.5-ton military truck, made by GMC.
