Tim,
I work on the other side; I have also had bits of steel in my eye on a number of times.
YOU CAN'T BE TOO CAREFUL!!!!!
What to do?
DO NOT RUB YOUR EYES.
Face downwards and rise if possible; blink if not too painful.
That piece of iron containing steel will start to rust in the salt rich tears your eyes are protected by so don't wait...go straight to the ED. Your eye will begin to grow a layer of epithelium...(Skin) over the steel right away and the rust will spread deep into the cornea, sometimes taking years to leach out.
In the ED we instill a topical anesthetic to numb the surface and then we manually remove as much of the material as is possible. The cornea...the clear part to the eyeball that covers the Iris of the eye...(the pigmented area that surrounds the pupil), is only 12 cell layers thick, and if the metal perforates this all sorts of problems may arise.
If there is any remaining foreign material it may need to be ground out by an Ophthalmologist using what amounts to a tiny die grinder...not for the meek of heart!
We then put you on topical antibiotics for a few days.
You cannot be too careful!!!!
Eddie
